We consulted with a special education college in Birmingham Wilson Stuart sports college introducing fishing as an alternative activity to wheelchair football, basketball etc, there was a definite need for bespoke equipment in order for some of the students to participate in the events. Some of the more complex impairments meant that simply holding a fishing rod or turning a reel would mean if we didn't come up with a solution they wouldn't be able to take part making it a non inclusive activity going against all the policies of the college.

By speaking with the individual children we were able to identify their individual needs in terms of their equipment and ability to adapt, design after design were made from basic items such as kitchen work top stands, ply board and commercially produced rod holders. Putting them all together meant on this occasion multiple impairment needs were met, we continue to find solutions to help disabled children and adults enjoy fishing the same as the next person.

We are always looking for electrical and mechanical engineers who can donate some time to help us develop new equipment for disabled people to go fishing equally as possible, are you that person. There is equipment for everyone, the barrier is cost sometimes we receive funding from generous benefactors which allows us to buy an item as long as they meet the criteria.
